Fortune Garden

Fortune Garden is one of two long-standing Chinese takeaways on the Newhall stretch of High Street, the main road that climbs north out of Swadlincote toward Burton-upon-Trent. It runs as a bright, modern takeaway shop with a Cantonese, Peking and Thai-leaning menu, and trades evening-only, Tuesday through Sunday, closing Mondays.

The kitchen works through the broader-than-average menu that the shop is named on the local food sites for — Peking duck pancakes and salt-and-pepper starters, House Special Chow Mein, Yung Chow fried rice and the Wandering Dragon (a chef's-special mixed-meat seafood plate) are the dishes that regulars on Sluurpy and Tripadvisor pick out. Alongside that runs the usual British-Cantonese list of sweet and sour, chop suey, satay, chow mein and curry-sauce mains in the standard sizes.

Fortune Garden is a phone-and-collect operation with a short delivery radius into Newhall and the north Swadlincote estates. The shop scores well across the aggregator listings — the local Sluurpy rank puts it among the better-reviewed Chinese in the Swadlincote cluster — and it is one of the names that comes up first when households on the Newhall side talk about the regular Chinese.
