New Star

New Star — also listed at the same premises as Downfield Garden — is a family-run Chinese takeaway in the heart of Downfield, trading from a corner unit at the far north end of Strathmartine Road where the artery runs out toward the Downfield Park residential streets. The shop is a broad-card Cantonese carry-out with a chippy sideline and a small Mongolian dish section unusual in the local scene.

The menu is long: chow mein, fried rice, curry sauces, salt and pepper, sweet and sour, foo yung, chop suey and the standard run of beef, chicken, pork, duck, lamb and king-prawn mains through to substantial set meals for two or three. A separate fish-and-chips section covers haddock, sausages, pies and chip-shop staples, and the Mongolian beef and lamb dishes give the kitchen a distinct angle on the local Chinese-takeaway parade. The shop runs its own ordering site alongside a presence on Just Eat and Deliveroo, and the delivery radius covers the immediate Downfield scheme as well as the upper Strathmartine residential streets. Reviews on the aggregator pages run into the high hundreds and describe the food as fresh and the portions as generous.
