About London

Deptford is on the south bank of the River Thames in south-east London. It is named after a ford of the River Ravensbourne. From the mid 16th century to the late 19th, it was home to the Deptford Dockyard which was the first of the Royal Dockyards founded by Henry VIII to provide ships for the British fleet and merchant navy. Peter the Great visited Deptford to study shipbuilding. It is also the site of the knighting of Sir Francis Drake by Queen Elizabeth I aboard the Golden Hind. It is here that Sir Walter Raleigh purportedly layed down his cape for Queen Elizabeth. It was also the site of the mysterious murder of Christopher Marlowe in a house along Deptford Strand. Deptford started as two small communities, one at the fishing village on The Thames and the other at the ford. The two communities grew together and flourished while the docks were the main administrative centre of the British Navy. It was during thsi prosperity that some very affluent homes were built, like Stone House on Lewisham Way and Sayes Court which was home to diarist John Evelyn. The area declined after the Royal Navy left and as the commercial docks declined. The last dock, Convoys Wharf, closed in 2000.
