About A A Manzes

A A Manze's at 204 Deptford High Street was one of London's most extraordinary food landmarks — a Grade II listed pie and mash shop opened in 1914 by Pantaleone Manze, brother of the Michele Manze who had established the first of the family's shops on Tower Bridge Road in 1902. The Manze family had come to London from Ravello on the Amalfi coast in 1878. Inside: white and green chevron tiles, original terrazzo floors, marble-topped tables, wooden benches — an interior unchanged in over a century. The menu was pie and mash, jellied eels, hot eels and the characteristic green parsley liquor sauce. Historic England listed the building in 2023 as a rare and well-preserved example of a distinct vernacular cuisine that formed a staple of working-class London life. Owner George Mascall — Michele Manze's great-great-nephew — closed the shop on 25 January 2025 when he retired, ending 110 years of continuous trading. The building retains its listed status; the food is gone.

204 Deptford High Street SE8. The interior can still be seen through the window.
