About Afghan Kitchen
Afghan Kitchen is one of the most beloved and characterful restaurants in Islington -- a tiny, communal-table Afghan restaurant overlooking Islington Green that has been consistently recommended by The Infatuation, Thatsup and virtually every Islington restaurant guide for many years. The Infatuation describes it perfectly: "Afghan Kitchen serves hearty, tasty Afghan food in a minimalist setting. The food is saucy. Things like chicken in yoghurt and fish stew are perfect and also useful to mop up with their homemade naan-e-Afghani. The cosy nature of the space makes it ideal for a very personal party." Thatsup praises "comforting classic dishes, including vegetarian options" with "generous" portions and "unique" flavours.
The restaurant operates on communal tables across two floors overlooking Islington Green, where strangers regularly become friends over shared platters of Afghan food. BYOB (there is no alcohol licence, so bring your own wine or beer). The menu covers Afghan rice dishes including kabli pulao (lamb and rice with raisins and carrots), chicken or lamb korma in gently spiced tomato and onion gravy, yoghurt-based stews, and homemade Afghan flatbread baked in the kitchen. Vegetarian options always available. Closed Monday and Sunday. Always busy; arrive early or be prepared to queue.
