About New Saffrani
New Saffrani occupies a useful pitch on South College Street, the short lane running between the Old College quad — home to Edinburgh University's Law and other faculties — and the Nicolson Street strip. The restaurant has earned a reputation for an unusual approach among Edinburgh Indian houses: the menu places fish and seafood at the front, with dishes like prawn masala, fish tikka and Bengali-style fish curry appearing alongside more conventional tandoori and curry selections. Rara gosht and chicken achari have drawn praise from reviewers for depth of flavour. The room is popular with tourists staying around the Festival Theatre, which sits directly opposite, as well as university staff and students. A set-meal deal offers good value, and the kitchen closes in the early afternoon between lunch and dinner service. BYO is not offered, and the restaurant is fully licensed. Takeaway available.
