About Benes
Bene's sits at the Canongate end of the Royal Mile, roughly halfway between the Tron Kirk and Holyrood Palace — one of the few late-opening chippies in this stretch of Edinburgh's Old Town. The menu runs fish and chips, pizzas, kebabs and burgers, with the fish consistently praised for its freshness and the batter called out as particularly crisp. One of Bene's more colourful claims is a long-standing local story that Princess Diana once called in for fish and chips, though the Canongate has had no shortage of distinguished visitors over the centuries. The deep-fried Mars bar is also on the menu for those after the full Scottish experience. The Canongate draws year-round tourist traffic heading between the Royal Mile's main attractions and Holyrood Palace at the foot of the street, and Bene's catches that trade alongside local residents from the Dumbiedykes estate nearby. Open every evening.
