LAlba DOro Fish and Chips

L'Alba D'Oro on Henderson Row has been frying since 1975, and its track record in Edinburgh's chippy market is unmatched. In February 2002 it became the first takeaway in the world to receive a four-star award from the Scottish Tourist Board, and in August 2014 The Times named it the number-one fish and chip shop in the UK. The kitchen sources fresh haddock from Atlantic Fishmongers in Musselburgh and uses seasonally-sourced potatoes from North Berwick, washed, peeled and chipped on the premises daily. The Italian-Scottish heritage that started the business as a pizzeria is still visible in the name — alba d'oro means golden dawn — though fish suppers have been the core trade for decades. Henderson Row is in the New Town, an easy walk from Stockbridge and the city centre, and the shop has the relaxed confidence of somewhere that doesn't need to shout about its reputation because the reputation is already established.
