Spice Hut has traded from the same London Road shopfront in Alvaston since 1998, which makes it one of the longest-running independent Indian takeaways on this stretch of the south-east Derby A6 corridor. The kitchen has stayed under the same management for more than twenty-five years and has slowly broadened its menu beyond a pure Indian list — the curry side runs through the standard balti, karahi, madras, korma and house-special end of the menu, with naans and rice cooked to order, but the shop also carries kebabs, deep-pan pizzas, burgers and southern-fried chicken on the same ticket, which is the model most successful London Road takeaways have settled into to cover a wider weekend order. Most of the trade is collection and delivery — the shop is on Just Eat and Deliveroo — and the operation is evenings only. Local reviews are mixed, as they tend to be for any high-volume mixed-menu shop, but the consistent thread from longer-term Alvaston regulars is praise for the chicken tikka masala and the lamb karahi. The combination of price, breadth of menu and the sheer length of time the business has been trading from the same address has kept it in the local rotation.
