About Shahenshah
Shahenshah is one of the long-established Punjabi sweet centres and takeaways on the Pear Tree Road end of Derby's main South Asian food street, where halal butchers, sari shops and Indian grocers sit shoulder to shoulder along the corridor running south from St James's. The business is family-run and trades as a combined sweet shop, snack counter and curry-house takeaway. The window run of mithai — barfi, jalebi, gulab jamun, ladoo and the heavier carrot halwa — is what brings most of the trade through the door, particularly around Eid and Diwali when queues stretch outside.
Behind the sweet counter the kitchen turns out the snack and curry side of the menu — samosas, pakora, chana, chicken curry, karahi, and freshly-baked naan — at prices set for the local community rather than for visitors. Reviewers consistently call out the samosas and the breadth of the sweet selection; vegetarian and vegan options are available across the board. The shop closes Mondays and is one of the older names on the street, well known to anyone south of the city centre.
