Balti International

Balti International is one of Derby's most established Indian restaurants, trading from a double-fronted ground-floor site on Uttoxeter New Road in the West End and pulling in a city-wide trade rather than just the immediate residential catchment. The restaurant opened in 2003 and has built a long-standing reputation for its balti cooking, which it specialises in more single-mindedly than most curry houses in the area.

The kitchen runs a full Indian-restaurant menu — tandoori starters, the usual karahis, biryanis and chef specials — but the balti section is what it is best known for. Dishes come in the steel bowl, hotter or milder to order, paired with naan rather than rice; the chicken and lamb baltis are the most heavily ordered and the king prawn balti is the splurge option. Tandoori mixed grill and the haryali chicken tikka starter pick up regular mention in reviews.

The dining room runs across the ground floor on full step-free access following a recent refit, with a private function room upstairs that takes parties of up to thirty. The restaurant takes dine-in, takeaway and delivery; the kitchen runs late on Fridays and Saturdays.
