About London
Harley Street is in the City of Westminster in London which has been famous since the mid 19th century for its medical and surgical practitioners. There were around 20 doctors in 1860. This increased to 80 by 1900, and nearly 200 by 1914. When the NHS was founded in 1948, there were over 1,400. There are now more than 3,000. It is possible that 19th century doctors were attracted to the area by the quality houses and good rail transport links.
