The Great Indian

The Great Indian in Archway N19 is an Indian gastropub that opened in January 2025 in the converted Prince Alfred pub on Marlborough Road, just off the Hornsey Road. The Observer critic Jay Rayner reviewed it in February 2025 and called it "so different — it''s an amazing place", putting it immediately on London''s culinary map. Hardens records diners visiting from as far as Balham. Owner Aman Dhir — who also runs an Indian restaurant in Hackney under the same name — brought in as Executive Chef Jolly, a judge on MasterChef India for many years. The menu is a creative departure from standard Indian restaurant formats: small and sharing dishes including a Spiced Lamb Shank Pie with saffron-cardamom sauce, an entire section devoted to pao or pav (Goan Portuguese Confit Pork Belly with pickled cabbage, Tandoori Fried Chicken), plus grills and Indian street food in a proper pub setting with real ales.
