About The Tamil Prince
The Tamil Prince is one of the most acclaimed Indian restaurants in London -- a Michelin Guide 2025 listed pub-restaurant in the Barnsbury area of Islington, from chef-patron Prince Durairaj (former executive chef at Roti King) and Glen Leeson of JKS Restaurants (the group behind Gymkhana, Hoppers and BAO). The concept marries the setting of a classic British neighbourhood pub with the cuisine of Tamil Nadu, Durairaj's home state in south India. The Nudge calls it one of Islington's essential restaurants, Time Out rates it highly, and Olive Magazine editor Gina Jackson calls it simply "one of the best Indian restaurants in London."
The menu is a vivid survey of Tamil Nadu cuisine: small plates of okra fries, chicken lollipops, potato chaat, onion bhajis and desi salad; larger plates of robata lamb chops, grilled tiger prawns in garlic masala, Thanjavur chicken curry and buttery dhal makhani; all served with flakey roti and coconut rice. The Sunday roast with an Indian twist is a particular draw. Downstairs is a proper pub with a full bar and Indian-inspired cocktails; upstairs is the main dining room. A sister restaurant, The Tamil Crown, is also in Islington. Booking strongly recommended; the restaurant is very popular. Website: thetamilprince.com.
