Picnic Basket

Picnic Basket is a popular lunchtime sandwich bar on West Nicolson Street, a side street running off Nicolson Street a block south of Nicolson Square. The shop serves made-to-order sandwiches, baguettes and paninis from a large daily selection of locally sourced ingredients: smoked salmon and cream cheese, haggis, bacon and brie, tuna, roast chicken and a full range of vegetarian fillings. The bread selection covers seeded granary, soft white, sourdough and other daily choices. Picnic Basket has built a loyal following among University of Edinburgh students and staff from the nearby Old College, Bristo Square and Potterrow — reviews frequently note that the queue builds quickly at lunchtime and popular fillings can sell out by early afternoon. Weekdays only; closed at weekends. Counter service with takeaway only.
