About Mammas Pizza and Panzerotti
Mamma's has been on the Grassmarket since 1985, founded by two Canadians as what the restaurant claims was Scotland's first pizza delivery operation. The current owners are Paul and Caitriona, who met while working there and later married — a neatly circular story. The Grassmarket address puts it at the foot of Edinburgh Castle rock on one of the Old Town's most photogenic stretches, a former medieval market square now lined with pubs and restaurants.
The pizzas are stone-baked, and the panzerotti — a deep-fried or baked stuffed dough pocket, a Pugliese street-food staple — give the menu a point of difference from standard Edinburgh pizzerias. The restaurant won Best Independent Pizza in 2000-2001 and reached the final of the Dine In Awards, as well as winning the PAPA Scottish Regional Heat in 2017. Every pizza on the menu is available gluten-free, and there are gluten-free beers too. Nachos, mac and cheese, and steak-on-the-stone round out the menu. TripAdvisor rating sits at 4.0 out of 5 from 1,124 reviews, and the restaurant earned Tripadvisor's 2025 Travellers' Choice award.
