Banana Leaf South Indian

Banana Leaf opened on Old Dumbarton Road in 2008 as one of Glasgow's first Tamil-run South Indian restaurants, filling a gap that the city's overwhelmingly Punjabi Indian dining scene had left entirely unoccupied. The kitchen is run by Tamil chefs who cook the food they grew up with: idli and vada — consistently praised as the best in Glasgow — rice-and-curry set meals with fish, chicken or lamb, chappatis, poppadum and coconut-based sauces that diverge sharply from the northern-style gravies found elsewhere. Curry-Heute, the respected curry-house blog, has featured it among recommended Glasgow houses. The restaurant closes on Tuesdays. Portions are generous and prices honest, and the atmosphere is informal enough that solo diners feel entirely comfortable.
