Alfies Cafe

Alfies Cafe is a breakfast and lunch operation on Helen Street in Govan, a short distance from the BAE Systems shipyard where Royal Navy warships are still built on the Clyde. The cafe serves a traditional Scottish café menu — full breakfasts, bacon rolls, sandwiches and burgers — to the working community including yard workers, tradespeople and residents from the surrounding streets. Helen Street runs through an industrial part of Govan between the shipyard and the older residential tenement grid, and Alfies fills the role of an honest workmen's café in an area where that tradition runs very deep. The Govan shipbuilding district has a long association with hard, early-morning work, and a café like Alfies — practical, priced for the local pocket and open early — is part of that culture. A daytime-only operation.
