About Hole In Wall
The Hole in the Wall on the Great North Road is a daytime café and transport workers' institution, occupying a site with one of Barnet's deeper histories in the full-English tradition — the predecessor café on this road dates to 1935. The current business opens from early morning through the mid-afternoon Monday to Saturday, trading in hearty cooked breakfasts, meaty sausages, hot pies and strong tea at prices suited to working people. It is a daytime-only operation: no evening service, no delivery. The Great North Road (the old A1000 into London) has always generated the tradesperson and lorry-driver custom that keeps this kind of café viable. Local Barnet Society coverage documented its history when the original site was threatened with redevelopment.
