Blacklock City

● Closed British, Grill

13 Philpot Lane City of London, London, West London, EC3M 8AA

Blacklock City at 13 Philpot Lane in the City of London EC3 is the second branch of the acclaimed Soho chophouse, housed in a former electricity substation built on the site of a medieval meat market — ground as steeped in culinary history as any in the Square Mile. The Nudge notes "the subterranean venue feels just as steeped in history as you'd want." Like the Soho original, it serves charcoal-grilled beef, lamb and pork chops from Philip Warren's farm in Cornwall, with vintage cast iron Blacklock presses used to sear the meat. The £27 All In sharing deal — a stack of different meats on herb-flecked chargrilled flatbreads — is the centrepiece. The City location means weekday service from morning through dinner, with the Sunday roast drawing east London residents.

About London

Leadenhall Market is a covered market in the City of London, located in Gracechurch Street. The market dates back to the fourteenth century. It is open from 07:00-late Monday to Friday, and sells fresh food; among the vendors there are cheesemongers, butchers and florists. Originally a meat, game and poultry market, it stands on what was the centre of Roman London. The ornate roof structure, painted green, maroon and cream, and cobbled floors of the current building, designed in 1881 by Sir Horace Jones (who was also the architect of Billingsgate and Smithfield Markets), make the building a tourist attraction. It was used to represent the area of London near The Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley in the film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, and is featured in the film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. It is also popular among local city workers. In 1991 pop group Erasure used the market to film the video for their hit single Love to Hate You.
