About Lakehouse Hungarian Restaurant
Lakehouse is the only Hungarian restaurant in London -- a deeply personal, family-run dining room relocated to South Woodford from its original Leytonstone location in late 2023, run by Budapest-born siblings Mihaly (Mike) and Bernadette with head chef Zsuzsi. The Leytonstoner newsletter reviewed it warmly when it was at Cann Hall Road, describing "tin mugs of chilled cherry soup -- which they drank back in Budapest on hot days -- home-made nokedli (mini dumplings), paprika-dusted juicy roast pork." OpenTable diners call it "a hidden gem in East London" offering "excellent, authentic Hungarian food in a lovely traditional restaurant." Tripadvisor reviewers praise "everything phenomenal" from the mushroom paprikash to the stuffed cabbage rolls. Facebook affirms: "the only Hungarian restaurant in London."
From 2026, Lakehouse operates a refined model: dine-in service on the first and last weekends of each month (1–10pm), a budget-friendly weekly meal delivery service covering within 5 miles of South Woodford, and private hire for events (seats 30, stands 50). The menu covers the great Hungarian classics: slow-cooked goulash, chicken paprikash served with nokedli and sour cream, Hortobagyi pancake (stuffed in paprika sauce), cherry soup, stuffed cabbage rolls, and homemade palinka as a digestif. BYO (corkage £8). Hungarian wines. Website: lakehouserestaurant.co.uk.
