About The Black Lion
The Black Lion is a Plaistow institution -- the oldest operating pub in the area, reputedly dating back to 1742, and the only CAMRA-listed pub in E13. It is an icon to West Ham fans and a beloved local landmark described by Londonist in their Upton Park and East Ham guide as offering "rotating guest ales (it's a freehouse), friendly bar staff, incredible pies and distinctive architecture" that makes it "a destination in its own right." The pub's distinctive Victorian architecture and long history make it one of the most characterful and atmospherically interesting drinking spaces in East London.
The Black Lion operates as a freehouse, giving it the freedom to rotate guest ales from smaller and independent breweries alongside its regular selection -- a rarity in a part of London where the majority of pubs operate under tie arrangements. The pies are a particular draw. The West Ham Boys' Amateur Boxing Club is located at the rear of the pub. Open daily from noon.
