About Poppies Fish and Chips Spitalfields
Poppies Fish and Chips is an East End institution, a retro diner and chippy on Hanbury Street in Spitalfields that has been serving authentic fish and chips since 1945. Founded by Pat "Pop" Newland -- who came out of retirement at the age of 70 to fulfil his lifelong dream of opening an East End chippie -- Poppies was the original Hanbury Street site that started the journey, and it remains the sentimental heart of the brand. With over 3,000 TripAdvisor reviews and consistent praise from visitors and locals alike, it is one of the most-loved fish and chip restaurants in London.
The menu serves fresh fish prepared and cooked on the premises by an onsite fishmonger: classic cod, haddock and plaice in light, crunchy batter alongside golden chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce, fishcakes, prawn cocktail and traditional East End favourites. The retro 1950s interior, complete with vinyl records, Americana and nostalgic memorabilia, adds to the unique atmosphere. A full bar serves wines, cocktails, beers on draught and spirits. Open daily from 11am. Close to Shoreditch High Street Overground and Aldgate East tube stations.
