About Sun Wah
Sun Wah is the long-running Chinese takeaway on Park Road, a residential street tucked between central Ilkeston and the Manor Ground end of town. It works as a small neighbourhood Cantonese kitchen rather than a town-centre destination, and reviews on Restaurant Guru and Big Red Directory keep settling on the same words: reasonable prices, generous portions, and a menu that runs longer than the unit size suggests.
The list is properly Cantonese with Peking edges. Crispy aromatic duck with pancakes turns up in nearly every review, alongside the sweet-and-sour chicken Hong Kong style, beef in black bean, salt-and-pepper ribs and the king prawn dishes. Chow mein and chop suey come in the heavier Cantonese style; the special fried rice and Singapore fried rice are house staples. Set meals for two and three are popular with the surrounding residential trade.
The shop opens evening only, five through to half past ten or eleven, with a Tuesday day off — fairly standard for an independent Chinese in this part of Derbyshire. Hygiene rating is recorded as Very Good with the FSA. Most orders come by phone for collection or short-radius delivery, with a few regulars walking down from the residential streets behind New Manor Ground.
