Briggs Fish Bar

Briggs Fish Bar sits at the south end of Nottingham Road as it runs out of central Ilkeston, a small parade close to where the road begins to head down towards the Erewash valley. It is one of the long-running independent chippies in the town and has built a reliable following on Just Eat and through its own takeaway website over a number of years.

The menu is a proper combination shop. The fish counter handles cod in breadcrumbs, haddock and chips, cones of chips, mushy peas, curry sauce and the standard chip-shop sundries. Around the back of the menu the kitchen also runs a kebab and pizza section: donner meat with chips, chicken tikka with chips and a set of stone-baked pizzas including a Briggs Special, pepperoni-plus and a BBQ chicken. Combinations between the chip-shop side and the kebab side — donner-meat trays with chips and salad — drive a substantial share of orders.

Trading runs evening into late, with delivery across the Nottingham Road end of Ilkeston handled both through the Briggs Fish Bar website and Uber Eats. The FSA hygiene rating is currently three. For people living along the southern reach of the Nottingham Road, it is the standard Friday-night chippy.
