Proper Pasty Co

Proper Pasty Co is a small Cornish-pasty shop tucked into Water Lane in central Bakewell, a few yards from the bridge over the River Wye and on the route most walkers take from the car parks to the Square. The pasties are baked-in-Cornwall traditional, then warmed in the shop ovens through the day, and the shop also sells a short range of sweet bakes and decent coffee for the walking trade.

The traditional steak pasty is the main draw, with vegetarian, chicken-and-bacon and cheese-and-onion variants alongside it. Pricing is per-pasty rather than meal-deal, and seating is a handful of stools rather than a sit-down cafe — most customers eat on the move along the river or take pasties up to the Recreation Ground. Reviews on Tripadvisor are mainly positive on the quality of the meat and the pastry, with the usual scattered complaints about pasties cooling near the end of the day and the shop running cash-only at times.

It works as a quick lunch on a Peak District day out and is one of the easier places to grab something hot near the river without joining the queue at the famous Bakewell Pudding shops up the road.
