About The Architect
Set in a handsomely restored building dating back to the 1870s in Cambridge's historic Castle area, the Architect is the city's first place dedicated to proper Fish And Chips and traditional Pie And Mash. The whole idea here is build-your-own British comfort food: you choose your fish, your batter and your sauces, so the classics arrive exactly the way you like them. Portions are big, the frying is taken seriously, and there is a genuinely good gluten-free offering that coeliac diners single out for praise.
Beyond the chip-shop staples there are pies, mash and hearty sides, plus a vegan take on fish and chips that has won over plant-based regulars. It works equally well as a relaxed sit-down with a well-kept ale or as a takeaway to carry home, which makes it a flexible choice on this side of the city. Reviews are largely positive, with the friendly team earning regular mentions, though a few diners note the odd inconsistency in the batter. For a modern twist on familiar seaside favourites in the heart of old Cambridge, it is worth the short climb up from the river.
