Batter is the house language at this Faringdon chip shop, and it gets applied to almost anything: black pudding, a burger, chopped pork, garlic sausage, bockwurst, and Mars or Snickers bars for afters. The fish counter keeps to the classics, with cod, haddock, plaice, cod roe, fish cakes and scampi, but the surrounding menu is far wider than a chippy usually runs. There are jacket potatoes with nine fillings, hot pies and pasties including a Luxury Balti Pie and a Cornish patty, baguettes filled with doner or chicken kebab, and a kebab list mixing doner, chicken, pork and beef in nearly every pairing. Pizzas, burgers and southern fried chicken buckets fill out the rest, with chilli con carne offered over chips or rice. Puddings are proper canteen fare, running through sticky toffee, jam sponge, syrup sponge, bannoffee and tiramisu, sitting next to tubs of Ben & Jerry's.
