About Jewel Of East
Jewel of East is a Chinese takeaway on the south side of Brechin High Street, the long sloping main street that runs through the centre of the Angus royal burgh between the old market crosses and the Brechin Cathedral end of town. The shop sits among the run of independent shops that form the working centre of Brechin — a butcher, baker, hairdresser and pharmacy block, with Jewel of East holding its position on the parade as one of the longer-running Chinese takeaways in the burgh.
The menu sits to the printed Cantonese-with-curry-section format that defines small east-coast Scottish Chinese takeaways: chow mein, sweet-and-sour, salt-and-pepper plates, chicken curry over chips, set banquets for two and three, foo yung, fried-rice plates and a starter section of crispy seaweed, sesame prawn toast and spring rolls. The operation is phone-and-collect — small counter, no dine-in — and trade is local-repeat from the High Street terraces and the residential streets behind.
Brechin sits in inland Angus on the route between Forfar and the Aberdeenshire border — the historic royal burgh with the Brechin Round Tower, one of only two Irish-style round towers in Scotland, attached to Brechin Cathedral a short walk down from the High Street.
